Newark Congressman Donald Payne Jr. Hospitalized After Heart Attack
Prominent New Jersey Democrat Remains in Hospital
Washington, D.C. - April 24, 2023
U.S. Representative Donald Payne Jr. (D-NJ) has been hospitalized since suffering a heart attack last week. His office issued an update on his health on April 17, stating that he "suffered a cardiac episode based on preliminary results." Payne, 61, has been representing the 10th Congressional District of New Jersey since 2012, succeeding his late father, Donald Payne Sr.
The Democratic congressman was a member of a prominent Newark political family. Before entering Congress, he served as a state senator and on the Newark Municipal Council. He is known for his advocacy on issues such as healthcare, education, and affordable housing.
Payne's hospitalization comes as Congress faces a critical deadline to pass a $1.2 trillion federal spending bill. The bill, which would fund the government through September, includes funding for local projects in Payne's district. Payne voted in favor of the bill before being hospitalized.
Payne's office has not released any further updates on his condition. Well wishes and messages of support have been pouring in from colleagues, constituents, and friends wishing him a speedy recovery.
