As the tax deadline draws near, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reminds taxpayers that they can use IRS Free File to electronically request an automatic tax-filing extension.
Free File is a partnership between the IRS and eight private-sector tax software companies that provide free online tax preparation and e-filing services to taxpayers with incomes of $73,000 or less. To access the Free File program, taxpayers can go to IRS.gov/freefile.
Once on the Free File website, taxpayers can choose from a variety of tax software products that meet their needs. These products can help taxpayers complete their federal tax returns, calculate their refunds, and e-file their returns directly to the IRS. IRS Free File is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, until the tax filing deadline on April 15th, 2024.
Filing an extension gives taxpayers more time to gather their tax information and file their returns. However, it is important to note that filing an extension does not extend the time to pay any taxes owed. If taxpayers owe taxes, they should make an estimated payment by April 15th, 2024, to avoid penalties and interest.
