IRS Announces Tax Relief for California Residents
Statement on Mailing of Balance Due Notices
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced tax relief for individuals and businesses in parts of California.
New Filing and Payment Deadlines
As a result of the recent winter storms, most individuals and businesses in California will now have until November 16 to file their 2022 returns and pay any tax due. This is an extension from the original May 15 deadline.
The new deadlines will be applied automatically to any taxpayer whose address of record is in San Diego County or any of the following counties:
- Imperial
- Kern
- Lassen
- Modoc
- Plumas
- Shasta
- Sierra
Additional Extensions for Disaster Declarations
Taxpayers affected by storms in other California counties may also qualify for extensions. Residents in the following counties have until October 16 to file and pay their taxes:
- Alameda
- Alpine
- Amador
- Butte
- Calaveras
- Colusa
- Contra Costa
- Del Norte
- El Dorado
- Fresno
- Glenn
- Humboldt
- Inyo
- Kings
- Lake
- Los Angeles
- Madera
- Marin
- Mariposa
- Mendocino
- Merced
- Mono
- Monterey
- Napa
- Nevada
- Orange
- Placer
- Riverside
- Sacramento
- San Benito
- San Bernardino
- San Francisco
- San Joaquin
- San Luis Obispo
- San Mateo
- Santa Barbara
- Santa Clara
- Santa Cruz
- Siskiyou
- Solano
- Sonoma
- Stanislaus
- Sutter
- Tehama
- Trinity
- Tulare
- Tuolumne
- Ventura
- Yolo

The IRS encourages taxpayers who need additional time beyond the automatic extension to file for a further extension.
