Big Lots Set to Close Up to 40 Stores as it Battles Financial Woe

Discount retailer announces plans to shutter locations amidst worsening financials and a challenging consumer environment

Following in the footsteps of 99 Cents Only, Big Lots becomes the latest addition to the growing list of struggling discount retailers.

Ohio-based retail chain Big Lots recently disclosed its decision to shut down 35-40 store locations this year, a move prompted by its deteriorating financial position and a sluggish consumer market. The company has expressed significant doubt about its ability to persist as a viable business entity and is contemplating the possibility of bankruptcy.

The news comes on the heels of similar announcements by other discount retailers, with 99 Cents Only filing for bankruptcy in April. Big Lots' closures will disproportionately impact smaller communities and leave behind vacant storefronts. The specific locations of the affected stores remain undisclosed, including the fate of Big Lots' 109 California locations.
