Marlins' Playoff Hopes Take a Hit as Jazz Chisholm Goes on IL
All-Star Second Baseman Out with Right Lower Back Strain
Miami Marlins star Jazz Chisholm Jr. has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right lower back strain, the team announced Wednesday. The injury is a major blow to the Marlins' playoff hopes, as Chisholm is one of their most dynamic players.
Chisholm is batting .254 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs this season. He has also stolen 21 bases, which is second in the National League.
The Marlins are currently 54-53, which is good for third place in the NL East. However, they are just 3.5 games behind the first-place New York Mets.
With Chisholm out, the Marlins will need other players to step up. Jon Berti is expected to take over at second base, while Avisaíl García and Jesus Aguilar will be counted on to provide more offense.
The Marlins open a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves on Thursday.
