Water Levels Rise in Bangladesh Rivers

The Bangladesh Flood Forecasting and Warning Center reported on Thursday that water levels in several rivers across the country have risen significantly, particularly in the eastern and northeastern regions.

According to a 2015 World Bank Institute analysis, approximately 35 million people in Bangladesh, a highly climate-vulnerable country, are at risk.

Flood Situation in Northeastern Bangladesh

Extensive flooding has stranded an estimated 18 million people in northeastern Bangladesh. The flooding is a result of weeks of heavy rainfall, which has submerged homes and caused widespread disruption.

Impact on Residents

Joy Bhuiyan Kazi Piash, a 24-year-old Feni resident, stated that he has taken shelter from the flooding.

India's Denial of Dam Release

India's Ministry of External Affairs has denied allegations that the flooding in eastern Bangladesh was caused by the release of water from an Indian dam on the Gumti river in Tripura.
